The Australian Shepherd is a dog that has a capacity for tremendous energy and drive.
Being extremely intelligent and eager to please, they are capable of excelling at a large number of tasks.
They learn very quickly and love to play games. A bored, neglected, unexercised Aussie may even invent its own games and jobs.
Keep in mind that what appears to be hyperactivity could just be boredom for example, an Aussie may go from being at rest to running laps at top speed around the house before returning to rest.
Aussies were bred during a time period when families needed their pets to work along side of them. Do to this, they are happiest when they have a job to do so keep them busy.
They are great guide dogs for the blind, hearing dogs for the deaf, therapy dogs, drug detectors, search-and-rescue dogs, and show dogs.
Like other herding breeds, these dogs also excel at dog sports, especially herding, dog agility, frisbee, and flyball.
They also work out really well as cattle and sheep dogs do to their natural inclinations towards obedience, utility, and agility.
Australian Shepherds make wonderful family companions, too -- provided the family that adopts the Aussie has ample time and abundant space for their new friend.
By learning how to train your Australian Shepherd correctly, you can take this bundle of energy and harness it into a remarkable pet for your family.

This is a good informative book that understands the true nature of the Australian Shepherd. They are not dogs but an additional breed of animal that has to be trained differently than dogs. It teachers you how to train the Aussie in a different way. I have trained basic dog and puppy commands for years and can tell you first hand that the Aussie must be treated differently.Product details

Training Australian Shepherds edition by Cynthia Davis Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews
I chose this book because it's simple to read, understand and to the point. This book covers the basic training needs and to understand the behaviour of the Aussie. This animal seems difficult until you understand them, once you do, it becomes easy to raise them. I found this book all that I need rather than the club's they offer with outrageous prices. Me and blue boy thank you.
We recently were given a lab/Australian shepherd mix a beautiful very large pup......coming from 16 years of terriers, this book has helped us understand the Aussie part of the pups brain....would recommend it for Aussie owners.
I was looking for something more geared towards the idiosyncrasies of Aussies and outside of mentioning that they need more exercise than most breeds and are good at agility there was nothing really breed specific. Glad it was only 99¢!
I have read this book several times just in case I have missed something. It gives you an "overview" of training, but not specific steps on how to train your Aussie. If it does all that, then I missed it! Aussies are very smart dogs and need to be trained daily as they grow, but will eventually get the message (I hope).
This book really has no breed specific information it could be any general dog book. It has very little information that you could pick up on any website, nothing in depth or noteworthy. There are a lot of better books that you can get.
I expected a litlle more, but for a person who is thinking on buing an australian shepard and haven't done it this is a great book to start. If you have already an australian shepard like me and wanted to learn how to correct behavier you need to find a complement to this book since is just give you the basics.
Owning Rat Terriers &training them is very different from training Aussies. Knowing about toys, how to correct behaviors has been helpful. I have a strong minded, very sweet 5 month old pup who has been out smarting me. I have new tools & they are helping.
